Typically a small business will set out using a peer to peer network in which two or more computers are connected in a workgroup through a hub or switch. Resources are shared between computers with either simple sharing enabled (the default) or advanced sharing with various permissions. This may suffice however the drawback is that each machine has to be managed individually and individual backups need to be considered. This can be a time consuming approach. A far better approach is to use a client server model in which accounts and resources are managed centrally through a server. Windows Server 2008 is such a server.
